We are very proud to share the outstanding participation of ourfifth-gradestudents in theSecond Children’s Plenary Session of the Mijas City Council. This important event took place in the Plenary Hall of the Mijas City Council, where our students representedLa Cala de Mijas.
A Commitment to Our Forests 🔥
The central theme of his work wasforest fireprevention and the importance of conserving our natural areas, a crucial issue for a municipality with the environmental richness of Mijas .
Our young council members have devoted time and effort to thoroughly studying the materials provided in class, titled“Verde que te quiero verde,” on forest care and fire prevention. These materials gave them a deep understanding of:
- The value of trees:They are like the “lungs of the Earth,” essential for clean air, shade, water conservation, and as a habitat for many animals.
- The problem of deforestation and wildfires:Understanding how fire—often caused by carelessness or negligence—leads to oxygen depletion, leaves animals homeless, and slows the forest’s recovery.
- The causes of the fire:Â By identifying the elements necessary for a fire to occur (fuel, air, and heat), and the different types of fires based on their origin:
- Carelessness:Such as discarding cigarette butts, leaving pruning debris unattended, or holding unauthorized barbecues.
- Ignorance:Such as not knowing that glass can cause a fire or that certain chemicals are flammable.
- Negligence:For example, failing to ensure that a campfire is completely extinguished or failing to report a smoke hazard.
- Indifference:Not participating in reforestation efforts or assuming that “someone else will take care of it.”
Submission of Proposals and Commitments 🤝
During the plenary session, the students defended their position with great conviction, explaining how deforestation affects local wildlife (foxes, wild boars, and common chameleons) by destroying their habitat and disrupting the food chain .
To cap off their participation, our students drafted and read their ownpledgesto become “heroes of the planet,” emphasizing the importance of taking care of both nature and electronic devices, which, if they overheat, can pose a fire hazard at home.
We would like to congratulate the fifth-grade students for their hard work and for serving as an example ofactive citizenship and an awarenessof the value of our environment.
